Start with the portfolio, not the price
A good portfolio tells you almost everything. Look past the polish and check for the things that actually predict your result:
- Real brides, not just editorial. Studio-lit shoots look great but wedding-morning work in natural light is the real test.

- Skin that looks like skin. You want a finish that reads well up close and in photos, not a heavy mask.

The questions worth asking
Once someone's on your shortlist, a short conversation sorts the pros from the rest. Ask:
- Do you offer a trial, and is it included or extra?
- How many people can you do on the morning, and do you bring a second artist for larger parties?
- Do you do both makeup and hair, or makeup only?
- Are lashes and touch-up products included?
- How do you handle travel to my venue or home?

Book a trial — then decide
A trial is the single best way to judge an artist. You see how they listen, how they translate a reference photo, whether the look lasts through the afternoon, and whether you actually click. Book it a month or two out, wear it for a full day, and take photos in a few different lights. If it's a great artist but not quite your look, that's fixable. If you don't feel comfortable in the chair, trust that.
Red flags to watch for
- No portfolio of real weddings — or only heavily filtered images.
- Vague pricing that only appears after a string of messages.
- Won't confirm your date or is slow to respond when you're trying to book.
- Overpromising — anyone guaranteeing a look with zero interest in your skin or your photos.
